Front-load washing machines have become the standard in Vancouver apartments and condos. They’re efficient — but they have specific failure modes. Here’s what we see most often.
Washer Won’t Drain / Water Left in the Drum
The number one service call for front-load washers. Before you call: pull the drain hose out of the standpipe and check that it’s not pushed in more than 8 inches. Also check the drain hose isn’t kinked behind the machine.
The most common actual cause: a clogged drain pump filter. On Samsung, LG, and Whirlpool front-loaders, the drain pump filter is behind a small access door at the front bottom of the machine. Cleaning it takes two minutes and solves a remarkable percentage of “won’t drain” calls.
Washer Is Shaking Violently During Spin
Four possible causes: the machine isn’t level, the anti-vibration pads have worn out, the drum suspension rods have failed, or the concrete balance weight has cracked. If the machine walks forward during the spin cycle, it’s almost always the suspension. This should not be ignored — a walking machine can damage the water inlet hose.
Washer Won’t Start
On front-load washers the most common cause is the door latch assembly. The machine won’t start if it doesn’t think the door is fully closed. On Whirlpool and Maytag front-loaders, the door latch is a plastic mechanism that fatigues over about 4-5 years of daily use. The part costs $35-65 and takes about 15 minutes to replace.
Washer Smells Bad / Mold in the Drum
Front-load washers develop a musty smell if they’re not dried out between uses. Leave the door cracked open between uses, and run a hot empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar once a month. If the smell persists, clean the drain filter and the detergent dispenser drawer.
